Fifteen MSS girls were invited to the Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel to participate in the Michelle Kwan's experience sharing session on the 25th of January, 2007.

Below are some student reflections and photos of the session.

Dreams Do Come True

“Dreams Do Come True”. Michelle Kwan is a good example of a person who has successfully managed to turn her dream into reality. It gave me great pleasure to attend the talk given by Michelle held on 25th January 2007.

Michelle is an American figure skater who has won nine U.S. championships, five world championships and two Olympic medals. A celebrity in figure skating, she was named a U.S. public diplomacy ambassador last year. Her commitment to figure skating has made her an ideal role model for young people and sports enthusiasts.

Michelle’s achievements did not come by chance. She started skating when she was five. When she reached the age of eight, she got up at three o’clock every morning to attend skating training for three to four hours before going to school. Despite the tough training, Michelle never gave up. Eventually, she won both the U.S. Championships and World Championships in 1996.

After listening to Michelle’s sharing of her values and life experiences, I reflected on my attitude towards pursuing my goals. I have never had such a strong passion as she has. I used to believe that dreams are illusions and imaginations, something impossible to attain. Very often, the probability for dreams to be realized was so low that I chose to give up before I started working towards them. I suppose I should take a different attitude from now on. Whenever I feel like giving up, I will recall Michelle’s saying that learning skating is like the road to success, that you have to learn how to fall before you know your way. Then you will be able to learn the skills and get yourself prepared for the challenges ahead.

As Captain of the Table-tennis Team this year, my dream is to make the team members more motivated, skillful and cooperative in all the upcoming competitions. I hope that the insight I have gained through Michelle Kwan’s sharing of life experiences will help me lead my team to success this year.

An Enlightening Experience

On 25th January 2007, 15 MSS students had the privilege to join students from other schools in meeting Miss Michelle Kwan, “the most competitively successful figure skater in US History”, in an experience sharing session at Hong Kong Disneyland.

The session proved to be enlightening as Miss Kwan shared with us the importance of goal-setting, dedication, teamwork and perseverance. When students asked her about the things she had to sacrifice for her career on ice, she admitted that she had not sacrificed anything at all. Rather, it was her parents and friends who had to sacrifice for her sake. She then reminded us to show our appreciation towards those who have always supported us, especially our parents. One of the highlights of the session was when she showed the audience some tricks on ice-bowing and curtsying. It was fun!

Many questions were raised and answered during the sharing, one of which was Vivian Chiu’s question:

“You’ve got plenty of experience as a figure skater. What have you learnt from ice-skating that helps you with your job as Walt Disney Representative and Spokesperson as well as the First American Public Diplomacy Ambassador?”

In summary, Miss Kwan’s response to the question was to adopt a positive attitude when facing difficulties. It is also important for one to maintain a high motivation level and strong will-power to overcome laziness. Through the programme, we gained a lot of inspiration and really benefited from her words. The sharing session was very meaningful and the time certainly worth spending.
